CALIFORNIA EAGLES
The California Eagles (Special Olympics) program has been one of our most loved programs since its inception in 1986. This program annually brings over 100 young people and adults with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, and other special needs or disabilities out to the golf course 25 weeks per year.
The participants are taught the basics of the game of golf and our Life Skills curriculum. They spend time on the driving range, practice green, golf course and end their season with a tournament and barbeque. Physical therapists have verified that golf activities help the participants improve their mobility, balance and coordination. The program also adds to the participants ability to concentrate which results in increased personal learning.
Participants especially love the social aspect of this group, as it is an important as the golf and life skills. The participants make great friendships with each other, our staff and volunteers. Those who have been in the program the longest mentor the newer players—therefore builds their confidence. As a result they gain pride in their accomplishments on the golf course, helping their peers, and assisting the staff and volunteers.
The California Eagles is also one of our most volunteered for programs. Our teen-aged participants volunteer as mentors to help out each week. These volunteers always come out of this experience having received far more than they have given. These special participants are a treasure to our organization and all who are involved.
